summer windows

The other night I was crawling into bed...
literally I crawl...
over the husband if he has proceeded me.

We have this wonderful little tree house bed room.
It's a little 'anteroom' adjoining what is 'the master suite.'
Two of it's four walls are lined with lace covered windows,
the other wall is double doors into the walk in closet,
along the other wall is the radiator and entry door.
Way back when this home was built, it probably was intended to be a sun porch/sleeping room....
It would be a wonderful little nursery, or studio space or office...

When we first moved in to this place we kept it clear and kind of used it as our dressing room,
since the closet was right there and our bed was in it's proper place in the bed room area.
But I loved that little room...So one day...I moved our king size bed into this little back room...
It fits, but really with not an inch to spare?!?
It is pushed into the back far corner
so there is only walking space around the bed as you enter the room.
There is enough room for the closet doors to swing open on my husbands side of the bed, about 5 feet, and at the end of the bed (on the radiator wall) there's about a foot.
It doesn't' feel tight because of the windows....and we just love our little tree house room...as do our children.

One day at the dinner table I was bemoaning that I'm getting old,
and the knees just aren't what they used to be,
and that I think it's time we moved our bed back into the 'bedroom'...
I was surprised at their strong reaction?!? They said "no, that's a perfect bedroom!"

We were out of town overnight for a wedding, and our daughter was in town,
along with some other out of town family....
for my husband's birthday party which was the following day.
She got to stay in our room and she was thrilled to sleep in the tree house bed?!?

So as I was crawling into our bed the other night, I said to my husband, "I love summer!"
He said, "yeah? I can never remember if we like summer or winter better?!?"
And I proceeded to tell him why definitely summer...
(and in a month or two I'll be telling him 'definitely fall')
To have all the windows open
to feel that cool night air moving in
and even in our little home in town...
there are so many night noises
that trickle of fountain water
from the neighbor's garden
a sneeze in the distance
(and he wonders who hears him)
voices talking
crickets
music
tv
and then the morning
and day sounds
birds
traffic
the rain
squirrels
door slams
skate boards
marching bands
the wind in the trees
lawn mowers and weed whackers
and working guys around the neighborhood
and I think that is why I like summer better
I like the sounds of the world
being connected
sure there are the sounds I don't like
angry fights at night
though we haven't had any of those for quite awhile
those earlier than the butt crack of dawn garbage men on Monday mornings
the traffic
the dogs
sirens
And as we continue to have this cool summer, much to my delight,
I am suddenly aware of how often my mind is turning to autumn...
those fall days are coming
those blue crisp days
and the burst of fading colors
But I can already feel the ache of missing
the warm light of morning
and long lingering twilight nights
we'll be putting away the porch cushions soon
and closing those windows
and the easy access to the our little world
