so why tonight of all nights does the ice cream truck
appear on the scene?
we've been home almost every night this summer
sitting on the front porch swing
or watching tv with all the windows open
and not once have we heard it
but tonight
as I weeded in the yard
I heard it
the music from many summers ago
the first song our son learned to play by ear
scott joplin's entertainer
I heard it as I hosed the driveway
I heard it after all my yard work
as I got in and out of the shower
it was still somewhere just a street over
playing memories into these last evenings of summer
