the temperature dropped

standing in silence
hearts covered by hands
traffic guards with glowing vests
tears streaming from their eyes

as far ahead as we could see passing
as far in the distance as we could see coming
only on tv have I ever seen so many police cars

never will I drive our main artery through town
the same way again
not because I now know
that there are enough officers to file single file
along our four mile stretch of road
into and leaving town
but
because there is one less

This is always SO hard, my own son a police Sargent it is always a cause for prayer when I know he is out on duty. So hard and so unfair, to our 'uniformed officers' and their families.
