a Holy day...Saturday

DSC_0425
I have had these sand dollars for years
I picked them up off the ocean floor with my feet!?!?
in Hilton Head many years ago
probably illegally?!?

They usually snuggle up next to some 'pottery barn' starfish
in a large wooden bowl in front of the window
in my bathroom

This week when I cleaned I separated them and put them in this little bowl...
thought nothing of it...
Then this morning as I photographed some of the morning light coming in...
they caught my eye
and I remembered some legend about sand dollars...

There's a pretty little legend
That I would like to tell
Of the birth and death of Jesus
Found in this lowly shell.

If you examine closely,
You'll see that you find here
Four nail holes and a fifth one
Made by a Roman's spear.

On one side the Easter lily,
Its center is the star
That appeared unto the shepherds
And led them from afar.

The Christmas poinsettia,
Etched on the other side
Reminds us of His birthday,
Our happy Christmastide.

Now break the center open,
And here you will release
The five white doves awaiting
To spread Good will and peace.

This simple little symbol,
Christ left for you and me
To help us spread His Gospel
Through all eternity.

a little hokey...

but I love the fact that they have been there forever
reminding me of our wonderful beach days
but today something causes me to see them in a new way
with new recollections

for today...Holy Saturday
