our own 'music of the night'

this past weekend began with...
the local high school marching band's debut
It's always such an exciting moment
all summer we hear the drum line practicing
and see them marching in formation up and down the streets
around the neighborhood

but on the night of the opening game when they are
in uniform
drum line, majorettes...and band
assembled and ready to process into the stadium
it is a true autumn joy

everyone comes out onto their porches
the barefoot children line the sidewalks
and we listen and watch
as fall marches in

the music of the weekend continued
as we all went out to hear our good friends
who have formed a 'trio'
play in a local bar to kick off our university's football season!
haven't been in a bar in a looonnnggg while!
the smoke...the how shall we say... 'fraternizing'
but it was a good to be out way past our bed time
with good friends
and great music
Cat Stevens: Father and Son
Joe Cocker: The Weight/take a load off Fannie

and then the afternoon like no other...
listening to Neon Swing Experience
at Stone Villa Winery
a perfect early autumn afternoon at a gorgeous winery
situated on the edge of a pond
under cool skys with bursts of welcome sun
wonderful swing music
delicious local wine
great food
dancing
with a family who became quick and immediate friends...
and that I hope we will be getting to know even better...

My creation
followed by labor day evening in the park
with the Wheeling Symphony
just me and my hon
like we used to do before marriage...before children
when we were young...

"As Time Goes By"
Casablanca 1942

music and words by Herman Hupfeld

[This day and age we're living in
Gives cause for apprehension
With speed and new invention
And things like fourth dimension.

Yet we get a trifle weary
With Mr. Einstein's theory.
So we must get down to earth at times
Relax relieve the tension

And no matter what the progress
Or what may yet be proved
The simple facts of life are such
They cannot be removed.]

You must remember this
A kiss is just a kiss, a sigh is just a sigh.
The fundamental things apply
As time goes by.

And when two lovers woo
They still say, "I love you."
On that you can rely
No matter what the future brings
As time goes by.

Moonlight and love songs
Never out of date.
Hearts full of passion
Jealousy and hate.
Woman needs man
And man must have his mate
That no one can deny.

It's still the same old story
A fight for love and glory
A case of do or die.
The world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Oh yes, the world will always welcome lovers
As time goes by.

Living in a winter climate, we don't have marching bands. I think our community is less for it. A sense of connection, although I don't miss the early morning practices of my youth.

Looks and sounds like a wonderful time.
